How to handle being a parent during COVID-19…

coping with work life balance during pandemic

It is the time of year when parents are usually getting ready for their kid(s) to go back to school. Whether it was buying school supplies or getting their child caught up on the summer reading, parents got guidelines from schools on exactly what to do. As a parent, knowing exactly what to do is relief but also a rarity. While there was never a guidebook on how to be a perfect parent, the COVID-19 outbreak has everyone searching for answers.

The key word being everyone.

Back to school anxiety and stress

Parents are doing the best they can to manage work and home life during this unprecedented pandemic. The ‘Back to School’ season is unlike any other school year prior. School districts are changing plans on a weekly, even daily basis. If you are feeling overwhelmed, worried, guilty every day—you are not alone. Remember, no one has a guidebook right now. The fear of the unknown is running ramped across the board.

So, what can you do to reduce parental anxiety and stress during COVID-19? Here are three tips to achieve better balance and well-being.

3 Tips for Parenting During a Pandemic:

  1. Stop self-isolating—parents can help support each other by being open and honest. Share what you are going through instead of hiding it.

  2. Be a role model to your kids—there is no better time to teach your kids that it is OK to get help. Going to therapy or finding a support group lets your kids know they can ask for help too. They are likely experiencing school anxiety as well.

  3. Give yourself a break—practice self-care now more than ever. Try resting before you get exhausted, or taking 5 to 10 minutes to breathe and reset.
