What is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a dynamic and interactive approach for emotional healing. For teenagers and pre-teens, it can be especially effective because so much of an adolescent’s emotional development is affected by how, when, or even if they feel connected to others. Instead of meeting with a counselor for individual or family therapy, a pre-teen or teenager is welcomed into one of our groups as an equal. Although these groups are facilitated and guided by one of our therapists, it is really the group as a whole who drives the interaction. During the session, they are encouraged to explore who they are, who they want to become, and safely challenge questions or issues that come up during this tumultuous period of their lives. This all happens with great excitement, bravery, or sometimes with trepidation. In any case, they are stretching their comfort levels with the knowledge that they are supported by their peers.
If you are considering therapy, together you and your therapist can explore what your needs are. Together you will work to develop a better understanding of the problem and discuss what changes might make the situation better. Group therapy involves one or more therapists who lead a group of clients in shared therapy. At The Kraft Group, we never have more than 8 people in group at one time. This allows group members to have a more intimate experience and allows each members needs to be addresses. Typically, groups meet for an hour and a half each week. Some clients attend both individual and group sessions and some clients attend only one or the other. Many groups are targeted to address certain topics such as addiction, trauma, codependency, anger management, and social skills.
It may feel intimidating to join a group of strangers at first, but our groups are carefully formed to ensure each individual will benefit. The goal of all groups is for each individual to feel the maximum level of emotional safety. In fact, most clients have been surprised with how satisfying our groups are. Our groups can act like a support network or sounding board. Other members of the group provide feedback, and each member can relate to some level of another life challenge and that takes away the feelings of isolation and shame which plague so many of us. The group dynamic also allows for another level of accountability which is so important when one is working towards lasting change.
